Dr. Lang-Anderson Leads Insightful Talk on Empathic Communication

Dr. Elvira Lang Anderson Leads Insightful Talk on Empathic Communication for the Healthcare Setting
Dr. Lang-Anderson spoke at the Harvard Macy Institute on the topic of “Solving the Empathy Conundrum”. In this talk she touched on patient experience and clinical outcomes in relation to the use of empathic behaviors, along with laying out three objectives for the session.
Empathy is widely recognized as fundamental to strong patient–clinician relationships. However, it is often evaluated as an inherent personal trait based on broad impressions — an approach that can be subjective, difficult to teach, and expectations that clinicians must empathize with patients’ distress may contribute to empathy fatigue. Rather than positioning empathy as an internal quality clinicians must “feel,” Dr. Lang-Anderson introduced a practical, skills-based framework centered on observable empathic behaviors.
With video demonstrations, interactive role play, and research drawn from more than 130,000 patient visits, participants can explore how specific communication techniques can meaningfully influence patient experience, clinical outcomes, and clinician satisfaction. This discussion emphasized empathic behaviors and how it can be clearly defined, taught, practiced, and validated through measurable patient outcomes.
The session worked through three core objectives: distinguishing empathy as a personal trait from observable behaviors; reframing empathic communication as a set of teachable, evidence-based skills; and practicing a rapid-rapport technique applicable to everyday clinical encounters.
Dr. Lang-Anderson offered attendees usable strategies to strengthen patient connections while supporting professional resilience. The perspective on empathy is not as an abstract ideal, but as a skill set that can be cultivated to improve care for both patients and clinicians.
